"You gain strength, courage, andconfidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in theface."
– Eleanor Roosevelt
Yet, living courageously is not about the eradication of fear. It is, rather, a triumphant march through its domain. Courage does not inherently mean the absence of fear; it embodies the mastery over it. It is a voyage that requires navigating the thickets of our deepest anxieties, where the undergrowth is dense with the gnarled branches of our doubts and worries.
When Tish and I decided to make the courageous decision to move to Mexico for a month, our journey was a testament to the power of faith over fear. We chose to start our adventure with a week on Isla Mujeres, followed by a few weeks in Akumal before Tish's visit to Hope4Cancer in Cancun. This move was not just a change of scenery, but a bold step into the unknown, driven by our belief in the transformative power of faith and the healing potential of new experiences.
As we embarked on this path, we engaged in a continuous dialogue with our fears, learning to understand their origins and the messages they carried. Each step forward in this journey was a step away from the grip of fear, towards the liberation that comes with true courage. This process was not a fleeting act but a persistent endeavor, where each encounter with fear sharpened the soul and fortified the spirit.
Living on Isla Mujeres and then in Akumal, we found ourselves enveloped by the natural beauty and tranquility of these places, which became our sanctuaries of peace and reflection. These weeks were filled with moments of prayer and meditation, grounding us in our faith and providing the strength needed to face the upcoming treatments. The serene beaches and the rhythmic sounds of the ocean served as reminders of the divine presence guiding us.
In this pursuit, emboldened by Joshua 1:9's command to "be strong and courageous; do not be frightened, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go," we were not merely survivors of our fears, but conquerors who reclaimed control over our destinies. This scripture became our mantra, a beacon of light in moments of doubt, reinforcing our commitment to face each challenge with unwavering faith.
Our decision to move to Mexico, to immerse ourselves in unfamiliar surroundings, and to seek alternative treatments was a bold declaration of our belief in the power of faith over fear. Each day, we cultivated our spiritual practices, deepening our connection with each other and with God. These practices became our anchors, providing stability and hope as we prepared for Tish's treatments.
Through this triumphant journey over our deepest anxieties, we uncovered the vast expanses of our potential and the limitless possibilities that were once veiled by fear. Herein lies the true power of courage—it enables us to see beyond the immediate specters of fear, to the boundless opportunities that await us in the grand theater of life.
As we continue on this journey, we are reminded that courage is not the absence of fear but the determination to move forward despite it. Our time in Mexico was a profound chapter in our lives, one that taught us the importance of faith, community, and the unwavering belief in our ability to overcome. We faced each day with renewed strength and purpose, knowing that we were never alone and that God's divine presence was always with us, guiding us toward our highest potential.
The journey to Brave Church in Englewood, Colorado, and our courageous move to Mexico are testaments to the transformative power of prayer and meditation. Through faith, we conquered our fears and cultivated a life of peace and purpose. This chapter of our lives underscores the strength found in community, the power of spiritual practice, and the profound impact of living a life guided by faith.
As we continue on this journey, we are inspired to face each day with courage, knowing that we are never alone and that God’s divine presence is always with us, guiding us toward our highest potential. Our story is a vivid reminder that when we live by faith, we transcend our fears and unlock the boundless opportunities that await us.

Be Strong and Courageous
Journal Entry by Tish — May 10, 2022
I am learning to listen. Learning to stop the “Tish” brain as my friend Kim calls it and simply listen. What is it like to completely listen? Well, you hear things. I want to make sure I hear the “right things.” The best way to do this for me is following God’s words. It has taken time to learn this, but as I watch God fight my battles and give me simple 2 word instructions, it is becoming more and more beautiful each day. Water helps clear the filth that can cloud our vision. Jesus is living water, and is clearing our vision daily. Let’s all drink more water so that the vision can be clear!
The time is now, we are feeling the battle. No more fear! Be Strong and courageous and know that God will be fighting your battles!

Courage To Heal and Love
Journal Entry by Tish — June 4, 2022
I started a 21 day positivity meditation today and the first topic was… courage. Courage can look many ways in our lives and although I don’t typically think of it, but today they asked where you feel courage may have played a role in your journey, I went to these events of the last year and realized that courage to have faith and to surrender are the steps I needed to heal.
Then I thought of the good events that occurred and realized that it was the courage to love and be loved that brought James and I together! Journaling any doubts and fears and questions has been recommended to me as a way to stay in healing. Especially if I tear or burn up these not helpful feelings, thoughts and emotions after penning them. I have journaled for years and reading through them brought to light many revelations about my life, but I have disposed of them now to start with a clean slate.
I am glad to have kept them, they definitely shed light on years of formative behaviors that did not build my health, but instead fed my downward shift in health, including mental, emotional, and physical. However, now that I am aware I no longer need to stay or revisit the old, unhealthy version of me.
THE COURAGE TO BEGIN
Embarking on any new journey requires a pivotal moment of bravery—the courage to take that initial, often daunting step. Amidst the resounding drumbeats of doubt and fear, this step marks the start of a transformative adventure, compelling us to leave behind the familiar comforts of our current lives.
Whether it’s changing careers, moving to an unfamiliar city, or starting a new relationship, each scenario demands a significant shift from the known to the unknown. These changes plunge us into uncharted waters where outcomes are uncertain and risks loom large. The courage to begin encompasses not just the physical act of starting anew, but also the mental preparation to embrace and navigate these uncertainties.
This process forces us to face our deepest fears about change—fears of failure, rejection, or irrevocable mistakes. It challenges our innate desire for stability and predictability. Yet, it is precisely in this challenge that the essence of true courage is discovered. Courage here means relinquishing control over guaranteed outcomes and trusting in the potential of the unknown.
Taking a leap of faith is fundamentally an act of trust—trust in ourselves, in the resilience of our spirit, and in the belief that the value of growth and experience gained is immense, regardless of the outcome. It's about believing we are equipped to handle whatever comes our way and that the lessons learned are invaluable.
Furthermore, the courage to initiate something new serves as a powerful example to others. It demonstrates that change, while inherently daunting, also opens doors to new possibilities and personal growth. It inspires those around us to embrace their own opportunities for growth and renewal. Therefore, the courage to begin is a profound declaration of our intentions to grow, explore, and fully engage with life. It propels us forward, urging us away from complacency and into the vibrant, dynamic flow of life where true growth occurs. Each new beginning, though fraught with uncertainty, is laden with potential and the promise of discovering new adventures, lessons, and strengths.
BUILDING RESILIENCE, CELEBRATING SMALL VICTORIES AND FACING GIANTS
Living courageously involves building resilience, celebrating small victories, and facing daunting challenges with determination.
Resilience is essential—it's the ability to recover from setbacks, failures, and disappointments. It isn't developed overnight, but is built through the cumulative effects of confronting fears and learning from each experience. Practical strategies for fostering resilience include maintaining a positive outlook, setting realistic expectations, and cultivating a robust support network. These tools equip us to better manage life's inevitable challenges.
Simultaneously, recognizing and celebrating small victories plays a crucial role in building a courageous life. Each minor success, whether it's speaking up in a meeting, rejecting an unhealthy habit, or advocating for justice, serves as a vital building block for our resilience and confidence. These moments reinforce our capacity to overcome fears and foster a habit of bravery.
Furthermore, living courageously means being prepared to face significant challenges, or 'giants,' which seem insurmountable and can paralyze us with fear. The key to confronting these giants is not to stand unarmed, but to be equipped with lessons from past victories and resilience strategies. Drawing inspiration from both historical and contemporary figures who have overcome their giants, we learn that with conviction and the right approach, even the most formidable obstacles can be surmounted.
Together, these elements form a comprehensive approach to living a life marked by courage and perseverance, encouraging us to move forward, equipped and inspired, no matter the size of the challenge ahead.
SUSTAINING COURAGE
Living courageously is not just about moments of bravery; it's a sustained practice that becomes part of everyday life. This chapter explores strategies to nurture and maintain courage over the long term.
A key technique in sustaining courage is mindfulness, which anchors us in the present moment and helps manage past regrets and future anxieties. Regular mindfulness practices like meditation, deep breathing, and mindful walking enable us to face challenges with calmness and clarity, enhancing our resilience and courage.
Equally important is the role of community and relationships in bolstering our courage. Our connections provide essential support and strength, particularly during difficult times. Cultivating strong, supportive relationships helps us feel a sense of belonging and counters the isolation that fear can create. Sharing our struggles and victories contributes to a culture of courage within our communities, encouraging mutual support and growth.
In summary, sustaining courage is about creating a lifestyle that prioritizes bravery. Through mindfulness, nurturing relationships, active community involvement, and ongoing self-reflection, we can ensure that courage is a lasting trait that guides us in all aspects of life.
LIFE LESSONS AND ACTION ITEMS: The Role Of Faith Over Fear - Living Courageously
Living courageously in the face of fear is a journey that many strive to undertake, but it requires a steadfast commitment to one's beliefs and values. Faith, whether spiritual, personal, or communal, serves as a powerful anchor that can guide us through the turbulent waters of fear and uncertainty. By integrating faith into our daily lives, we can cultivate resilience, compassion, and a proactive approach to overcoming challenges. The following action items provide a roadmap for harnessing the power of faith to live courageously, encouraging us to embrace daily practices, engage in service, and set ambitious, faith-driven goals.
2. Engage in Acts of Service and Compassion: One of the most powerful ways to live courageously through faith is by turning outward and serving others. Acts of service not only benefit those in need but also reinforce your sense of purpose and connectedness to the broader community. Volunteer your time, offer support to friends or family members, or get involved in community projects. These actions demonstrate faith in humanity and a commitment to making a positive impact, which can diminish personal fears and foster a courageous, compassionate heart. By focusing on the needs of others, you build a life that reflects the strength and love inherent in your faith, making fear less dominant in your daily existence.
3. Set Bold, Faith-Driven Goals: To truly live courageously, set ambitious goals that align with your values and require a leap of faith. These goals should challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and trust in the process, regardless of the uncertainties involved. Whether it's pursuing a new career, embarking on a personal project, or committing to a significant lifestyle change, approach these goals with the conviction that faith will guide you through any obstacles. Document your progress and reflect on how your faith supports you during challenging times. This practice not only propels you towards achieving remarkable things but also reinforces the belief that with faith, you can transcend fear and accomplish your dreams.
CONCLUSION: The Transformative Power Of Courage
Living courageously transforms fear from a barrier into a gateway, ushering us into a realm of possibilities that only bravery can reveal. As we conclude this exploration of courage, it is essential to recognize that each step taken in courage is not just a move forward—it's an ascent toward a fuller, richer life.
The journey of courage is neither linear nor without challenge; it is a path that winds through the highs and lows of human experience. It demands persistence, resilience, and an undaunted spirit willing to venture into the unknown. The road will be strewn with obstacles that seem insurmountable and nights that feel interminably dark. Yet, it is precisely these moments that test our mettle and forge our spirits in the fire of courage.
Embracing a courageous life means accepting that fear will accompany us on our journey, but it does not have to define our path. When we face our fears, we often find that they lose their power over us, dissolving under the light of our brave actions. By confronting what frightens us, we not only overcome these fears, but also discover new strengths within ourselves—strengths that were perhaps hidden, waiting for their moment to shine.
The rewards of living courageously are profound and immeasurable. They manifest in a life lived authentically, where actions align with values and dreams are pursued with relentless passion. This kind of life is rich with purpose, vibrant with color, and overflowing with joy. It is a life that looks back not with regret but with a gratifying sense of fulfillment, knowing that no moment was left unchallenged by fear.
Living courageously also means embracing vulnerability, understanding that true strength often lies in our ability to be open and honest about our fears and uncertainties. It is in this vulnerability that we connect more deeply with others, fostering relationships built on trust and mutual respect. These connections enrich our lives, providing a support network that helps us navigate the challenges we encounter.
Moreover, courage is a catalyst for change, inspiring others to step out of their comfort zones and pursue their own paths of bravery. When we lead by example, we create a ripple effect, encouraging those around us to embrace their fears and strive for their aspirations. This collective courage can transform communities, fostering a culture of resilience and empowerment.
So, as we close this chapter, remember that to live courageously is to choose a life of extraordinary possibility. Embrace your fears, step boldly forward, and claim the life you deserve; not just by surviving the days, but by leading them with courage. In doing so, you will inspire those around you to step into their own arenas of bravery, creating ripples of courage that resonate throughout communities and generations. In the end, the transformative power of courage lies in its ability to turn ordinary moments into extraordinary opportunities.
